Story Time
Prereading Vocab Exercise
Present the following words using the prepared power point as well as some common objects.
After the presentation of each pair of words, have students repeat the words.
Beginning—end, sky—earth, empty—full, form—no form, darkness—light, good—bad, day—night, evening—morning
You will read the story three times.
1. Read each verse one by one in both languages. (If you do not know Chinese, you can possibly have a student help you along with the pinyin, or ask for a helper. If these options are not possible, just do not use the Chinese.)
2. Read the English slowly and have students repeat. (Do not worry if your students do not understand every word. Students will still gain skills in listening and repeating the sounds.)
3. Read the English with the accompanying power point to solidify certain common important words. Emphasize words in the power point.
1 In the beginning God created the sky and the earth. 2 The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit was moving over the water.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light!” And there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good. So he divided the light from the darkness. 5 God named the light “day” and the darkness “night.” Evening passed, and morning came. This was the first day.

Demonstrate stand up and sit down. Have students stand up and sit down 4 or 5 times.
Repeat with hands up and hands down, run, stop, turn around, jump. Make sure each one is done 4 or 5 times, and then finish with sit down.
Time to Write
Teach the Colors
Using colored paper, teach and elicit the colors: red, yellow and blue. Repeat with the colored balloons that were already used in class.
Practice
Level up: If students are true beginners, you should only give commands, and students demonstrate understanding by doing the required action. If some students don’t feel challenged, you can give them the role of calling out actions.
Find the Color
At the conclusion of the last activity, have students give you the papers. Say, “Mary, please give me the yellow paper, etc.” After you have collected the papers, place the papers about the room. Call on students to stand up and touch a color called upon. The student must go and find that color and touch it. When every student has had a try, call on students to get up and give you the colors you call out. If you have extra time, you can allow students to place the papers about the room themselves.
Alphabet Time
Kick the Color
Take out another three colored balloons. Have students practice listening to the colors and fulfilling commands with sentences such as, “kick the red balloon,” “Pass the blue balloon to Bill.” Etc.
Cool Down
Hand out coloring paper and crayons. Instruct students to draw three balloons. Demo on the board. Have students write their names in the balloons. Lastly, instruct students to color the balloons various colors studied today.
Goodbye
Say hello to the animal in the box. Review the greeting and introduction with animal and various students. Say goodbye and introduce a goodbye song from YouTube. One goodbye song I like is: https://youtu.be/PraN5ZoSjiY

Finally, have the animal come alive and demo the target dialogue with the animal. “Hello, what is your name? My name is… Nice to meet you. Goodbye. See you later.” Have the animal go about the room and practice the dialogue with random students. Try some acting and make the animal interesting and fun.
